Anyone that owns their own jewelry collection knows just how difficult it is to stay organized.
To help you out, we’ve put together these suggestions to keep your jewelry organized and orderly:
- Keep Your Jewelry Secure
Store your jewelry in a container or wardrobe and prevent the piece from moving around. While a fabric-lined jewelry box would be ideal, this can be as simple as using a shoebox with pieces of fabric.
- Prevent Your Jewelry from Tarnishing
Jewelry can tarnish when it’s not worn, especially silver and gold. To maintain the luster of your jewelry, place silver anti-tarnish strips with your jewelry collection in order to absorb the oxidants which cause jewelry to discolor and tarnish.
- Inventory Your Jewelry
Unfortunately, your jewelry can easily be lost or stolen. By taking a regular inventory, you will make your live easier if you ever have to fill out an insurance claim or police report. Photographs and written physical descriptions of each piece and it’s appraisal or purchase cost is ideal. Be sure to store and back up this information apart from your jewelry in the event it is destroyed or taken too.
- When Traveling, Use a Case
Traveling can be tough on your jewelry pieces, so it would be smart to use a travel case to protect your favorites. Traditionally made of fabric or leather, jewelry travel cases can carry jewelry of all kinds, rolling up to a size that is easy to fit in most suitcases, makeup bags, purses or business attaches. A case like this is an excellent investment to protect your favorite pieces when on the road.
Although jewelry is vulnerable while it’s worn, that doesn’t mean it can’t be damaged while in storage. A diamond may be the hardest substance on Earth, but that doesn’t make it invulnerable. Diamonds can easily scratch other diamonds! Diamond jewelry can also damage softer stones, as well as metals like gold and platinum. For this reason, always store jewelry separately so that pieces don’t come in contact with one another. Wrap each individual piece in tissue or cloth or put them into separate compartments in your jewelry box or travel bag. Be sure to be extra careful with your pearl jewelry due to its softness. Keep the original boxes and wraps that come with your jewelry purchase – they are often the best way to store and package the jewelry for storage and travel, providing extra protection from damage and dirt.
